Causes of vulvar cancer

The possible causes and risk factors for vulvar cancer include:

Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV infection appears to play an important role in the development of up to half of vulvar cancer cases, particularly the basaloid and warty subtypes.

Weakened immune system

People with weakened immune systems, such as those who have had organ transplants or are infected with HIV, have an increased risk of vulvar cancer.

History of cervical or vaginal cancer

Having a history of these other gynecological cancers can raise the risk of developing vulvar cancer.

Precancerous conditions like vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN)

VIN is a precancerous condition that increases the risk of developing vulvar cancer.

Older age

The risk of vulvar cancer increases with age, with the average age at diagnosis being 65-69 years old.

Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of developing vulvar cancer.

Lichen sclerosus and lichen planus

These chronic skin conditions of the vulva may also increase the risk of vulvar cancer.

Stages of Vulvar Cancer

Stage 1

Vulvar cancer is typically diagnosed when the tumor is found only in the vulva and has not spread to the lymph nodes. The outlook for stage 1 vulvar cancer is generally positive, with a good chance of recovery through surgical removal of the cancer and surrounding tissue.

Stage 3

The tumor has spread to the upper two-thirds of the urethra, the upper two-thirds of the vagina, the inner lining of the bladder or rectum, or to any number of lymph nodes.

Stage 2

The tumor is bigger in size and has grown into the urethra, the lower one-third of the vagina, or the lower anus. Cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes.

Stage 4

The tumor is now attached to the bone, or cancer has possibly spread to lymph nodes that can not be or there is distant spread.
