Types of Endometriosis

Treated by Dr Namrata:

Endometriosis surgery treats a condition in which the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus and affects a woman during reproductive years causing severe pain during periods and may also cause infertility. This condition is called Endometriosis and has several types which affects and occurs in and around different areas.

Superficial Endometriosis

This type of endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue grows on the surface organs like ovaries, fallopian tubes and the outer lining of the uterus within the Pelvic Cavity.

Ovarian Endometriosis

In this type of Endometriosis the endometrial tissue forms cysts termed as endometriomas or chocolate cysts on the ovaries.

Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE)

This is one of the most severe forms of Endometriosis where endometrial tissue penetrates deeply into pelvic organs, such as the bowel, bladder, and the walls of the pelvic cavity.

Rectovaginal Endometriosis

Rectovaginal Endometriosis is a type of DIE that affects the rectum and the vagina and leads to pain during bowel movements and intercourse.

Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is not a type of Endometriosis but nearly similar to it.
It occurs when endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus and causes pain and expansion to the uterus during menstruation.

Extra-pelvic Endometriosis

It is a rare type of endometriosis found outside the pelvic region affecting different organs like Lungs, Diaphragm, and the Brain.

When you are looking for a doctor who can perform endometriosis surgery in Indore with suitable skill-set and experience, Dr Namrata Kachhara is an expert in treating all types of endometriosis.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

The symptoms of endometriosis can vary greatly among individuals. Common symptoms include:

  • Painful periods
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Infertility

Other symptoms might include nausea, diarrhoea, vaginal pain, constipation, and back pain. It’s crucial to note that not all women with endometriosis experience infertility, but the ones going through it may face significant challenges in conceiving. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing the condition and improving fertility outcomes.

Diagnosing Endometriosis

Diagnosis begins with a thorough medical history and physical examination by a fertility specialist. This evaluation might also include imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI. Laparoscopic surgery is the gold standard for diagnosing endometriosis. This procedure involves a small incision in the abdomen, allowing a laparoscope to visualize the pelvic organs.

Stages of Endometriosis

There are four stages of Endometriosis based on the intensity, the affected area and depth of the tissue growth. The Staging system is also known as the Revised Classification of Endometriosis.

Stage 1

The first stage is termed as Minimal, when there are isolated small lesions or superficial implants on the pelvic lining or ovaries. There are slight possibilities of adhesions in the pelvic area.

Stage 3

Stage three is also called Moderate. At this stage, Endometriosis implants are more widespread and there are chances of formation of cysts on one or both ovaries. The pelvic organs may stick together at this stage because of the more significant adhesions.

Stage 2

This stage is titled as Mild. The implants and adhesions get deeper at this stage. They might also be present on the fallopian tubes and the back of the uterus.

Stage 4

This is the most Severe stage of Endometriosis. The adhesions and implants throughout the pelvic region get more extensive and deep, binding multiple organs together.
At this advanced stage, the fallopian tubes may be severely affected and there are chances of forming endometriomas on either of the ovaries or both of the ovaries .
